A political science lecturer and analyst Clement Adu Acheampong has stated that President Akufo Addo’s comment on Ekumfi’s exclusion from developmental projects is unlawful and unfortunate.
He believes the president needs to apologize to the people in the area.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s NKOSUO NSEM morning show hosted by Obidehye Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Adu stressed, that a group of people in a certain area cannot be denied development just because they did not vote for a govt but as a leader, you have the responsibility of providing for your people whether they voted for or against you because there are still people in the area that voted for you.
According to him president Akufo Addo did not speak well as a leader and this must not be justified by anybody, the comment is unpardonable and unaccepted.
“Former president Mahama made a similar comment in the Ashanti region and it hurt the NDC in the 2016 General election.”
“If the president could identify the mistakes and apologize to the people of Ekumfi it would help NPP”
Meanwhile, the Coalition of Fante Youth (COFY) has reacted to the comments made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo attributing the neglect of the Ekumfi Constituency in developmental projects in his second term to the constituents voting against the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, who was also the Member of Parliament (MP) aspirant for the area in the 2020 elections.
The coalition expressed utter dismay at the president’s comments.
“We find this wayward comment from the President an affront to democracy and must find no expression in the regime of a self-professed lawyer and democrat. The President’s comment affirms the fears previously expressed by some compatriots of our land that, President Akuffo Addo deliberately neglected and abandoned the people of the Volta region to their fate when they were struck by disasters like the Keta tidal waves and the Akosombo Dam spillage because of their voting culture,” the coalition noted in a statement co-signed by its convenors, Eric Ekow Dadson and Nurideen Kobina Essah, issued on Wednesday, 17 January 2024.
According to the coalition, the president was “reckless in his actions to punish the entire people of Ekumfi for the supposed “sins” of the voting class”.
The coalition stressed that: “By his uninformed actions, the President deprived children of Ekumfi decent classrooms and educational materials, potable water, electricity, roads, sanitary and healthcare infrastructure. Mr President, are you aware that, by your insensitive action, some children have possibly died from drinking contaminated water? Or a Pregnant woman lost her life and that of her baby because you wickedly deprived them of good roads and healthcare infrastructure?”
It further stressed that the President’s comments make a “mockery of democracy and stifle the very essence of democracy”.
The coalition noted that the president’s “darling boy Kingsley Ato Cudjoe lost abysmally in his own NPP’s parliamentary primaries organized a few months ago.
