Chief Inspector Morgan with the Tema Community 2 District Police Command has advised the general public to desist from the act of subjecting innocent persons to torture and inhumane treatment for crimes they did not commit.
Speaking on Plan B FM Nkosuo Nsem with Obidehye Sakyi, on Criminal trial by ordeal, Inspector Morgan explained that it is a criminal trial in which the guilt or innocence of the accused is determined by subjection to dangerous or painful tests as submersion in water believed to be under divine control.
He added that, the perpetrators sometimes plunged the hand of the accused into boiling water and have it bandaged for three days. If the burn healed well, this was seen as a sign God judged the person to be innocent.
“In trial by hot iron, hot iron was used to burn the hand, to coerced the accused to speak the truth. This is an inhumane act that shouldn’t be entertained. Some even go the extent of injecting innocent persons just to slow them down to speak the truth to crimes they didn’t commit. Let me say that the priests or persons who lead charges to commit such heinous crimes could end up in prison for more than 10 years” he indicated
He therefore urged the general public to avoid taking the law into their hands but rather report all criminal cases to the police.
