The Tema Region of the Ghana National Fire Service is continuously educating the general public on safety measures to prevent domestic fire outbreaks in the region and the country as a whole.
Educating the Public on Plan B FM’s family, relationship, and lifestyle show dubbed NYANSAPO FIE, hosted by Dr. Michael Asenso on the topic “GOOD SAFETY PRACTICES IN THE KITCHEN”.
ADOII S F Oppong and Sub. Officer Godfred Asare has explained that the world’s taste for technology has grown to the extent that the harm it poses is mostly overlooked. Not to argue technological advances have more harm than good, but sometimes these result in casualties that are alarming and even caused ignorantly.
ADOII S F Opponghas cautioned the public not to fill their gas cylinder to the brim. This is to allow for space for gas expansion.
“The caution is that Liquefied Petroleum Gas consists of flammable Hydrocarbon gases like butane and methane which can easily spark fire under the least pressure and high temperature in the kitchen. Not filling your cylinder to the brim gives room for expansion under pressurization.
“Do not shake the cylinder to prevent agitations, as a normal routine in various kitchens and industries, instead of making use of the appropriate device(gauge) to check the leftover gas, the gas cylinders are rather shaken to determine that”. He stated
Sub. Officer Godfred Asare advised getting a measuring regulator to perform such a function.
Another practice that can be adopted is putting one side of the gas cylinder in water enough to cover the height of the cylinder and taking it out after some time. The used part which is from the top will be dry to where the level with the gas would have water droplets.
He stressed that cylinders must always be kept outside. Many people tend to give deaf ears to this caution however when there is a leakage of gas, it would be more safer on the outside than inside. The right option, therefore is to keep cylinders outside but away from conditions such as direct sunlight, combustion material, and fuel.
Regularly check gas cylinder tubes. Gas cylinder tubes which are normally rubber tubing give an extra warranty against gas leakage. Without a rubber tube, the gas cylinder may leak without detection it can cause an explosion with the least spark.
“Do not turn or off any gadgets and sockets when you smell the scent of gas in the kitchen it may spark fire. Also curtains must not be placed where the stove or burner is because it can also cause an outbreak.”
“Light up your matches before you turn on the burner or stove nob when ready to use.
“Malfunctioning rubber tubes always leave signs like hissing or a scent of rotten eggs. These indications are enough to make you change your rubber tubes”.
He advised the general public to be cautious about how they use the electrical gadget in their various homes be it sometimes over.
“Dont plug in all your gadgets in one socket because every gadget has it voltage that it requires so if many gadgets are connected from one source of power it can cause mayhem”
