Chief Inspector Morgan with the Tema Community 2 District Police Command has advised the general public on Plan B FM’s morning show NKOSUONSEM, on the topic “STAMPEDE”, hosted by Nana Yaw Abrompah.
Has said that stampedes typically occur when a large group of people all try to get away from a perceived danger. The phenomenon is similar to crowd collapses and crushes in both the conditions in which they begin dangerous levels of crowding and in the number and severity of casualties that can occur.
He said a stampede is a deadly and dangerous situation that occurs when a crowd surges beyond the capacity of space, moving in the same direction at the same time. During a stampede, people collide and pile up against or on top of one another,
“Sometimes some of the event centers don’t have emergency exits, and when the people at that particular even notice that their lives are in danger and want to escape use the same entrance usually can cause stampede”.
He stated that staying away from barricades or fences near the main stage can prevent one from becoming a victim in a stampede because this is where crowd pressure tends to surge. Try to stick to the sides or less crowded spaces. Stand on even, level ground.
He cautions event center owners to provide more exit points and emergency exits in their centers to give a free flow of crowds whenever there is an emergency.
