Rational use of medicines requires that “patients receive medications appropriate to their clinical needs, in doses that meet their requirements, for an adequate period.

Speaking on Plan B Fm’s family, relationship, and lifestyle show dubbed NYANSAPO FIE, hosted by Rev. Dr. Michael Asenso on the topic “RATIONAL USE OF MEDICINES ” with Dr. Marfoaah Tettey Amelalo a deputy pharmacist from Tema Polyclinic has said that rational use of medicines plays a vital role in avoiding preventable adverse drug effects, maximizing therapeutic outcomes by promoting patient adherence, and minimizing the cost of drug therapy.

She said the rational use of medicines allows for an objective approach that’s based on scientifically obtained data to reach informed decisions.
This reduces the chance of errors and assumptions. It also helps protect you from severe side effects and drug interactions. They help ensure your body can break down and use the medication. They help guide many treatment decisions.

“Sometimes one could prescribe a drug for his or her fellow just a doctor prescribed it for him or her and it worked so they will also tell the person to go for the same drug and dose but the sickness may be different, feels the same signs”

She advised that such practices are likely to lead to poor health delivery that may put patients at risk and result in the wastage of scarce resources that could have been used to tackle other pressing health needs, worsening of ailment, incorrect diagnosis and dosage, or even disability and premature death.
