Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.

Speaking on Plan B Fm’s family, relationship, and lifestyle show dubbed NYANSAPO FIE, hosted by Madam Mary Bright on the topic “Emotional Intelligence” Rev. Kwaku Imma Macarious explained that, Emotional intelligence can be described as a person’s ability to express and manage feelings appropriately while respecting the feelings of others. It’s a set of skills that children can begin learning at any age.

He said to kick start developing your emotional intelligence begin with your consciousness, compassion, and your ability to create connections, including with yourself, emotional self-awareness, emotional self-control, adaptability, achievement orientation, positive outlook, empathy, organizational awareness, influence, coaching and mentoring, conflict management, teamwork, and inspirational leadership.

Lady Marilyn Abeka- Daniels a lecturer and a counselor also said as a parent, you have a responsibility of encouraging your child to develop his/ her intelligence by playing music and dancing with them to help them build their emotional intelligence.

She said emotionally intelligent people can read others too. They observe social and emotional cues and see past simply what is said to what someone might be experiencing underneath. They care about how their actions affect other people, and they’re able to make predictions to avoid causing hurt.

And a child who can healthily express their emotions is likely to maintain healthier relationships than a child who screams or says mean things when they’re angry. The good news is, all kids can learn emotional intelligence skills. They just need adults to teach them how.
