Following the death of the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumawu Constituency, Mr Philip Basoah, Parliament has formally notified the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a by-election in the constituency.
Acting on the orders of the House, Mr Cyril Kwabena Oteng Nsiah, the Clerk to Parliament, wrote to the Chairperson of the EC, notifying them of the vacancy. Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin made this announcement on the floor of the House.
The Clerk, in accordance with Section 3 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana (Amendment) Act 1996, Act 527, requested the EC to take the necessary steps to hold the by-election.
The notification letter was sent on 27th March 2023, in line with Ghanaian law. The Speaker expressed the House’s condolences to the family of the late MP and prayed for strength for them in these trying times.
The Kumawu constituency is a vital part of the Ashanti Region. The late MP, Mr Basoah, passed away on 28th March 2023, at the age of 53, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. It is customary for the Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election in any constituency where a vacancy exists.
The EC has not announced the date for the by-election. The Commission is expected to make arrangements and announce a date for the by-election as soon as possible. The people of Kumawu are looking forward to exercising their democratic right to elect a new MP for the constituency.
