The Ghana Wheelchair Tennis team that was allegedly attacked in Nigeria by armed robbers in Ogun State in Nigeria has arrived safely in Accra this morning.
The wheelchair tennis team made up of Coach Phillip Plange, National Ranking Tour 1 champion Bernard Yawson, Stacy Mensah, and Razak Baba Abdul among others were attacked on their way back to Ghana after participating in the 2023 International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Team Cup Africa qualifiers.
The traveling team was attacked around 2:30 on Monday. The armed men inflicted facial injury on national champion Bernard Yawson, Stacy Mensah and the team driver on the other hand sustained minor injuries. Their valuables were also stolen but no life was taken.
Members of the team who were injured in the attack were taken to the hospital for treatment according to team coach Phillip Plange who spoke to CITI Sports in an exclusive interview.
“One of them smashed the front screen of the door and the glass pierced the side cheek one of the players his name, Bernard Yawson and blood started oozing out. One of the ladies sitting beside me Stacy Mensah also got injured but hers was minor likewise the driver” he said
“The players were treated and discharged. Management of the travel company also gave us some food and pleaded with us to let what happened go… We got here around 1:30 am this dawn. The players are currently at Accra Sports stadium” he added.
