Residents of Tamale in the Northern Region have braved the cold harmattan weather to join the #FixTheCountry Movement demonstration.

They also described the event as well-organised and attended.

At every intersection they crossed, the demonstrators held up traffic for close to 20 minutes.

Dressed in red and black, they sang patriotic songs while they waved placards with inscriptions, ‘fix the country’, ‘review the constitution’, ‘a new constitution now’, and ‘protect journalists’, among others.

The Convenor of the group, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, had insisted on organisers controlling demonstrators to ensure a peaceful and successful demonstration rather than police officers.

The group started from Jubilee Park through to the Police Headquarters area, through Teshigu to the Agric traffic light, and then the Water Works area before heading back to the town centre.

Speaking to JoyNews, a member of the #FixTheCountry Movement said the constitution had outlived its usefulness therefore the need for review.

He said the demonstration is to collate signatures to be presented to Parliament to push for an amendment.

“We all know the PNDC laws were merged into the 1992 constitution, a lot of these laws which were put in there were meant to favour some politicians in this country.

“In fact, Nana Addo in 1995 during the Kume Preku demonstration said there were a lot of nuisance taxes which were infused in the constitution which needed to be struck out.

“Today, he’s equally impounding more tax, are they there to serve Ghanaians or themselves?” he questioned.

He said there are some portions in the constitution which seek to serve only a few elites.

“So parts of the constitution have outlived their usefulness and that is why we are saying we need to review it. Even the Parliament house where they sit to make the laws has been renovated countless times why not our constitution?” he said.

He added that if the parliamentarians will not amend the constitution, they will continue to gather signatures from Ghanaians to show that a lot of people in the country want the constitution reviewed.
