Aged man held in custody for allegedly insulting Henry Quartey, family alleges human right abuse

Nii Odoi Kwao II of the Nii Odoi Kwao family house in Osu Kinkawe was remanded into police custody for one week by an Accra Circuit Court 9 today, Friday, December 9, 2022.

The elderly man was arrested for allegedly insulting Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey.

This has caused tension in Osu, as family members are upset about what led to Nii Odoi Kwao II’s arrest and remand.

Nii Odoi Kwao II was arrested from his home by Osu Police around 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022, and taken to Osu Police station before being transferred to the Accra Regional Police Command, where he was granted police enquiry bail yesterday.

This website gathered that the elderly man was
was arranged before the Accra Circuit Court 9 where the presiding judge remanded him for one week.

According to family members, after Nii Odoi Kwao II allegedly insulted Mr. Quartey, some security personnel allegedly stormed Nii Odoi Kwao’s house and vandalized some property, including a vehicle.

The aggrieved family described the incident as unfortunate, illegal, and an abuse of the fundamental rights of their relative.

They could not understand why their aged relative would be held in custody over an alleged insult.

Robert Koomson Jnr, a family member, told Rainbowradioonline.com that “The police stormed the family house in Rambo fashion and arrested our family head, Robert Koomson, with no regard for Mr. Koomson’s rights.

He stated “The police and other people claiming to be from National Security abused their father before whisking him away.

“They stormed the house with guns, vandalized property, destroyed a metal security barricade, destroyed a family vehicle, and towed the car from the house and delivered it to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.

Our family’s head was first sent to the Osu Police Station, then transferred to the regional command on the orders of men claiming to be from national security; he was refused bail and so was held in the cells; they denied his family and lawyers access; and on Friday, they rushed and sent him to court on the family’s blind side.”

We want Ghanaians to know that the Greater Accra Regional Minister sent gunmen to our family house, manhandled him, and violated his basic human rights. We are disappointed as a family, and we want Ghanaians to know what the minister did. Today, they used force to get their way.”
