The former Member of Parliament for New Juaben South who doubled as Finance committee Chairman in Parliament has advised the government of Ghana to write to AU to withdraw from hosting the 2023 African games.

According to him, the country is broke hence struggling to prepare adequately to host the games.

“In 2018, Ghana won the bid to host the 2023 African Games in Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi. Unfortunately, we cannot host the games. Preparations- and economics-wise, we are not ready to host the 23 sporting disciplines. The earlier we wrote to the AU to disengage the better. Food for thought ” Dr Mark Assibey-Yeboah said

The Accra 2023 African Games are expected to be held in August next year.

It will be Ghana’s first time staging the event.

Organisers have approved a 23-sport programme, with the ball the sole demonstration sport to take the total to 24.

Of the main 23, arm wrestling, cricket and rugby union are all set to make African Games debuts.

Recently, a member of the Accra 2023 African Games Organising Committee, Rex Brobby, assured us that work in host districts Legon and Borteyman was progressing steadily.

The deputy chief operating officer of the Organising Committee added that Ghana will hold the best edition of the African Games.

Brobby is the founder of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Ghana’s Fastest Human event and was a 4×100 metres relay team member for the nation at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.

He said the priority was improving the athletics arena, with the main venue being the University of Ghana Stadium.

A warm-up track within five minutes of the stadium is required to be approved by World Athletics.
