A Police officer identified as David Okyire Antwi believed to be a member of the SWAT team at the Eastern Regional Police Command together with an accomplice in plain cloth has assaulted a mechanic mercilessly at his shop in Koforidua- Effiduase.
Videos on the incident have gone viral in Koforidua as residents called for punishment against the officer.
About five months ago, the mechanic Francis Oyinka was hired by the Police officer to tow his accident vehicle -Toyota Camry from the Afram Plains area to Koforidua to repair which was done by the mechanic.
The Police officer has since been “blackmailing” the mechanic with his uniform and allegedly taking monies from him that he didn’t fix the car properly.
After five months of repairing the car, the police officer on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, came to the shop again claiming the second-hand shock absorbers fixed under the car by the mechanic were not in good shape hence demanding a refund of his money.
The mechanic however said the Police officer failed to return the shock absorbers immediately after he noticed was not working well for him to return to the spare parts dealer in Accra whom he purchased hence cannot do anything about it.
The Police officer became angry and together with the yet-to-be-identified accomplice, pulled the mechanic from a car he was repairing, and slapped him multiple times without any reasonable provocation.
The mechanic also attempted to defend himself by struggling with them.
This attracted many passersby to the scene who were furious about the misconduct of the police officer.
Sensing the danger of mob attack, the police officer called for reinforcement claiming he has come under attack.
About five police officers onboard service vehicle number GP 4807 arrived at the scene and violently pulled the mechanic into the vehicle, hit the head against the car, and crushed the fingers with the gate of the vehicle as he resisted going to Regional Police Headquarters rather they should send him to Effiduase District Police Station which was a stone throw from the scene.
The Police officers however overpowered him and drove him to the Adweso District Police Command but was released later.
Eyewitnesses were scandalized by the misconduct and lawlessness of the police officer.
Meanwhile, the Eastern Regional Operations Commander Chief Superintendent Raymond Kofi Erzuah, on Thursday, September 1, 2022, reportedly invited the police officer and the mechanic to a meeting to amicably resolve the issue and pleaded with the mechanic not to pursue the case.
The operation commander however rebuked the officer for his misconduct.
The mechanic is seeking medical treatment.
