A group calling itself Patriots Ghana has warned the Akufo Addo administration to postpone the plan to significantly hike utility tariffs by September 2022.

This follows announcements by the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) that from September 1, 2022, electricity tariffs will go up by 27.15% and water tariffs, by 21.55%, the group has said that the implementation date is inconvenient and therefore it should be postponed indefinitely.

“The Patriots Ghana would like to call on the Ghana government that, with an immediate sense of urgency should postpone the effective date, September 1st, 2022 for the utility tariff hike to indefinite. Again, we are drawing the attention of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to fact that, Ghana should not be an Island in terms of good governance among its neighbouring countries.”

In a statement signed by Secretary, Charles Nyame and Chairman, Hon. Adjei Twumasi, the group wondered why the Akufo-Addo government would be increasing tariffs when neighboring countries are not doing same.

The Akufo Addo administration which has collapsed the Ghanaian economy with its unbridled debt and corruption is described by critics as one of the most insensitive for piling up taxes and hikes in social services on Ghanaians reeling from economic misery.
