Some Pupils In Basic School Sell Their Used Pads For Survival – Nurse Hints

Some Pupils In Basic School Sell Their Used Pads For Survival – Nurse Hints
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A Public health promotion nurse at the Tema Polyclinic Imelda Irene Agyei has hinted that girls in some basic schools in the Tema west municipality sell their used pads for survival after menstruation, she revealed this on Plan B FM morning show Nkosuo Nsem when speaking to Ohene Addo.

She explained that their investigations revealed this when they patterned the Tema West Education directorate to educate the pupil about menstruation whilst they were celebrating the world menstrual hygiene day and they uncovered the strange revelation that some of the girls in basic are not well catered for by their parents which compels them to sell the used pads to people for ghc 5 per one used, this, because some of the pupils come to school with only ghc2 which clearly shows that some parents have one way or other, has neglected their responsibilities as parents and as ways and means to survive some girls sell their used pads for a living.

The SHEP coordinator for Tema West Municipal Education office madam Vida Budu Williams accompanied by Miss Yacoba Otoo Girl’s Education officer for Tema West Municipal office explained why the education directorate always celebrates the Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 days of May every year to create the awareness and to educate young adolescents in their puberty age on how to handle menstrual issues as they grow along.

Madam Vida Williams has urged parents to be friends with their children, especially girls and has a conversation on menstrual issues at home to have first-hand education before they reach that stage.

Miss Yacoba Otoo Girl’s Education officer for Tema West Municipal office also appealed to the government to consider girls when constructing classroom facilities by fixing changing rooms for girls when they are in their menstrual periods to avoid absenteeism because most girls absent themselves from school when they are menstruating.
