Some agitated plantain farmers at Agogo in the Ashanti Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti Region have threatened to sacrifice their lives to get justice after their farmlands were destroyed without compensation.
Speaking at a press conference organised by the farmers association, the public relations officer Mr J K Addae revealed that, over thousand farmers whose farms are at Sowodadiem and Tarieso in compartment 48 and 51 a forest conservation are perplexed by the pathetic act of a bamboo planting company called ECOPLANT .
Mr Addae speaking on behalf of the association said the land on which they have been cultivating for many years given to them by a company called Tropical farms have been destroyed overnight without any advance notice. He said several attempts to resolve the issues have proven futile.
” Mr Baki of Tropical farms gave us the land on which we have been cultivating for years now, we pay taxes for it, no prior notice was given to evacuate yet no compensation has been paid. Now we will be jailed because we can’t payback the bank loans ” he said.
Individual Farmers who spoke to Plan B News threatened to go the extreme even if it will cost them their lives to get justice.
” we are ever ready to lose our lives because our source of income is now wasted, what does planting for food and jobs mean when our hard work yields nothing, can we eat bamboo to survive ” they stated.
We are appealing to the government to aid us as a matter of urgency . We can’t cater for our household anymore , they added.
