Fifteen years after the enactment of the Persons with Disability (PWD) Act, 2006 (Act 715), which seeks to end discrimination against PWDs, they continue to go through harrowing experiences in accessing public spaces and services.
Although the Act gave a 10-year moratorium for all public buildings to be made disability-friendly, the premises of many public institutions remain “no go areas” for physically challenged persons after the expiration of the moratorium on August 11, 2016.
Mr Alfred Amponsah Ashanti Regional President for Persons With Disabilities in an interview with Bohyeba Afriyie on Plan B Fm’s Ebanoosen revealed that the discrimination in this Age he must say surprises him because he felt atthis Age they should be Accepted and treated same as others but they are treated like they are No Humans.
He Also pleaded with the Government to Come to their Aid As an Association because there are alot Of Things they lack like wheel chairs etc.
He added that most institution here in Ghana does not have ramps or elevators, making the premises inaccessible to physically challenged persons even the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) that has oversight responsibility for the welfare of PWDs do not Have disability friendly means of Accessing their office.
He concluded that the Finance, Youth and Sports, Education, Health, which operate in storey buildings, have no ramps and other disability-friendly means of accessing their offices which clearly depicts that they have not been Accepted in to The Society.
