Ghana President Akufo-Addo has promised the Black Stars players a “special package” as “a token of my appreciation and recognition” following the team’s qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
On Wednesday, Akufo-Addo met with the players, technical team, and management at Jubilee House to convey his gratitude.
The President expressed satisfaction that the Black Stars qualified for the World Cup during his presidency.
Black Stars failed to qualify for the last edition in 2018 when the President was only two years into his first term.
However, on Tuesday, March 29, the team qualified by drawing 1-1 with Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.
Ghana qualified on the basis of away goals after a goalless draw in Kumasi on Friday, March 25.
He charged the technical team to stay together and intact, suggesting that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kurt Okraku, keep them at least until the World Cup in November before signing a long-term contract.
President Akufo-Addo stated that he was in Abuja for an official assignment prior to the first leg in Ghana and sensed the nervousness of the Nigerians.
He stated that the Nigerians wanted to win the game in Ghana before the second leg since losing would make it harder for them at home.
And that’s exactly what happened, he added.
Ghana will find out their World Cup group opponents on Friday when the draw is held in Doha, Qatar.
