A 45-year-old man is reported to have mistakenly shot himself dead at Senya Bonsoku in the Awutu-Senya West District of the Central Region.

The deceased, Mr. Isaac Bentum, who was a professional hunter, was said to have mistakenly pressed the trigger and shot himself, in an attempt to remove his double-barreled gun from the car when he returned from hunting at dawn around 12:30 at noon, Thursday, March 17, 2022.

“Upon arriving we realised he [Isaac Bentum] had shot himself. He had returned from an unfruitful hunting expedition and was trying to retrieve his gun from his car. He opened the back door and was pulling the gun. The back seat was torn and so while he was pulling the gun, the trigger got hooked to the tattered seat and fired killing him…,” Senya District Commander, ASP Kingsley Asante narrated to Angel News reporter, Opanyin Darko.

ASP Kingsley Asante added that “we know a gunshot killed him but an autopsy needs to confirm it”

Father of the deceased, Nana Botwe, indicated that the whole community is in the state of mourning and shock after the unfortunate occurrence.

“My son is a farmer and also hunts because, in our house, everyone knows how to shoot. He had gone out to hunt and we didn’t hear from him until 12:30 pm. He had returned and was unpacking his things. We suddenly heard some noise and we rushed out to find him dead by his car in his house,” he stated.

Nana Botwe added that they initially suspected someone did it but later concluded that it was an accident.

“He was taking the gun from the booth and there is a net which caught the gun. He hadn’t removed the bullets and so the trigger fired and killed him”, he admitted.

Meanwhile, the body of the late Isaac Bentum has been conveyed to the morgue pending autopsy.
