The Registrar of the National Teaching Council (NTC), Dr Christian Addai Poku has revealed that approximately  30% teachers are unqualified to teach in the classroom.

Addressing the congregation at the launch of the Ghana National Council of Private school teachers’ continuous professional development (PST-CPD), Dr Addai  reiterated that it is for this reason that the NTC , GNACOPS and MoF are collaborating to train 2,000 unqualified private school teachers.

Mr Mathew Nyaba an educationist and a lecturer at the Gambaga college of education in an interview with Nkosuo Hene on plan b fm’s Ebanoosen revealed why the Registrar stated that.

He said that a professional teacher is one that studied education as course in the university or training college and an unprofessional teacher is one who has no education background .

He said we have a lot of unprofessional teachers because some time ago the Government allowed for something called pupil teacher and these teachers are shs graduates who are awaiting their result and that is how come we got soo many SHS graduate becoming teachers but today these types of teachers are mostly found In private schools.

He also said that it’s unfortunate these unprofessional teachers are rather seen as the best in the education sector be he believes is not sooo.

He indicated that the condition of the private school teacher is very different from Government school teachers in terms of learning materials and supervision.

He concluded that the trained teacher is the best person for the teaching job.
