Dr. Samuel Owusu, a United Nations (UN) Eminent Peace Ambassador and Country Director for the International Association of World Peace Advocates, Ghana Chapter, has cautioned that the government’s intolerance of citizens’ free expression could jeopardize Ghana’s peace if caution is not exercised.
He believes this will have an impact on Ghana’s ranking on the Global Peace Index next year.
His remarks follow the detention of several people in the country for speaking ‘against’ the current government and/or President.
Mr. Mensah Thompson, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), was arrested last week after stating that the first family’s relatives utilized the Presidential Jet for Christmas shopping in London.
Mr. Kwabena Bobbie Ansah of Accra FM was recently detained in connection with an alleged case of a false news publication and insulting behavior directed towards the First and Second Ladies.
In a recent development, Fix The Country Convener Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who was recently arrested, was charged with treason felony and denied bail after a social media post in which he attempted to create the impression of conducting a coup if the E-Levy is passed.
Dr. Samuel Owusu, speaking to Atinkaonline.com, encouraged the government to find ways to deal with people who promote violence without violating their right to free speech.
