Sergeant Emmanuel Arhin Kankam, a policeman with the Effiduase Police has taken custody of his brother for beating a taxi driver at Effiduase taxi rank. The offender, Lesley Arhin Kankam, was arrested this morning while he was still on his bed. Lesley with surprise on his face had thought his brother was visiting him to discuss family matters, but never did he know, he was about to face the law in the hands of his brother.

Sergeant Kankam (SK) as he is mostly identified in the Effiduase township, did not even allow his brother to explain to him before banking a handcuff on his hands at 6 AM this morning. You are under arrest for beating and assaulting one Elijah Bama, a taxi driver with the Effiduase Taxi Drivers Union. Anything you say or do will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney, the Sergeant stated to his brother and his wife before taking him away.

Colleague Officers at the Effiduase Police station who accompanied the Sergeant to make the arrest, were puzzled when the Sergeant pulled his brother from his house to the station this morning. In defending his motive of arrest, Sergeant Kankam (SK) stated that, he needed to set the ground for his juniors to see that, if they abuse the law, they won’t go scot-free.

I could have done the arrest myself but I wanted my junior officers and colleague officers to understand that, even if they been officers of the law, they mess up, I won’t allow it to lie low and deal with them as the law state. Even my blood brother, I have taken him, how far anyone else.

We need to act to make people understand that there are no favours with the law and if you commit a crime, you must be ready to dance to it, Sergeant SK added after the arrest.

Lesley who is still at the Effiduase Police station will be arranged before the Sekyere East District Court this morning for beating a 27-year-old man yesterday. Lesley who hasn’t made a statement yet is still in shock as to why his own brother will arrest him for defending himself.

Lesley Arhin Kankam on Sunday 9 January 2022, picked a taxi from Effiduase Cal road to Effiduase market. While in the car, he shouted at the driver when the driver made a stop to pick someone on the road. Are you stupid or what, don’t you know I am in a hurry, Lesley said to the driver yesterday after the driver decided to pick additional passengers on the road.

Elijah demanded GH¢20 for the trip and held Lesley on his shirt that, it’s either he pays him his money or he won’t allow him to go. This back and forth annoyed Lesley and in frustration, vented his anger on Elijah.

Elijah was admitted to the Effiduase Hospital for wounds after taxi drivers came to his rescue yesterday. Lesley, the taxi drivers thought, had beaten Elijah for free but upon reporting the incident to the police, the brother of the offender, Sergeant Emmanuel Arhin Kankam did not sleep on the issue and has arrested his brother for assault.
