I recall that before the 2016 general elections, the guagantuan money paid one Alfred Agbeshi Woyome was the talk of town and the then opposition New Patriotic Party talked and promised to retrieve this money and of course, punish everyone who has unlawfully scooped resources from the national coffers that belonged to the State.
Alhamdullilah! They fought a good fight and won. They were given the mandate to change the narrative because the then government was beautifully decorated with lots of corruption scandals.
Of course, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo majestically took the oath of office and from his speeches rendered, his immediate actions, and mannerism, I heard some Professors say that he is Nkrumah reborn. The man was on fire and he was in a “supersonic” speed to match up with the rest of the world.
After a year of being in office, gradually, rumors crept in concerning some of his appointees involved in shaddy deals to take over some State owned agencies, contracts, and others. We heard they were investigated, ‘acquitted and discharged’ because they had not done any wrong. Not once, not twice. And all those officers were beautiful saints.
Fast forward, we all know what went on till date: the people and institutions, whose works he used as reference in crucifying opposition on the GYEEDA, SADA, the Burkinabe Ford saga, were no more to be trusted.
Gradually, the Gold Coast Athletics saga, the security officers involved in the galamstop, missing excavators, the ECG-PDS scandal, some portions of the Kelni GVG contract, the Egyapa Royalties deal. All rumors about those deals were buried in a pit and covered to prevent traces in the name of a certain spectrum termed, the ‘national interest’!
Some people who were appointed to occupy sensitive positions, a year ago, two of them known to be corruption fighters had to leave their offices because we were being chased by the same system they were fighting because the artilleries used by this silent system seems to be aggravating and so, Mr. Martin Amidu and his brother, Daniel Domelevo had to leave their booths behind and ‘run for cover’.
Yesterday, the President was asking for a spacious Presidential jet at an ‘ungodly’ hour. A series of industrial strike actions by some aggrieved government workers greeted this request. The youth who voted MASSIVELY for him are back home after the promise of getting them permanent employment after the overhyped NABCO program abruptly came to an end.
A prominent Chief from the traditional council after frustration gave him an ultimatum to build the school in his area. He also attacked him by asking him to get the job done if that’s the case.
Now, a section of people who believed in his values as a Christian heard one Serwaa Broni walking through the corridors of Parliament and they became dumbfounded by her insolent, noisy-slippery-slippers she used to register her presence.
“Though poverty stares us in the face, it appears lost to those with power. The expressed commitment of the President of the Republic to protect the public purse, a promise that citizens welcomed, seems to be an illusion now.”
“Are those managing the public purse not concerned about waste and misappropriation of resources that belong to all Ghanaians? Can this be referred to irresponsible use of power or the lack compassion and empathy?” – Most Reverend Phillip Naameh, Speaker and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference quizzed.
Could it be that the group of Catholic Bishops’ proclamation could be a symbolic caution to the party in power or could it be that the God they mentioned, believed in, and gave Him the battle has thrown in the towel and deserted them in their own boat?
Today, we are hearing the Communications Team rubbish these queries raised by the eminent spiritual leaders saying they are vague: their claims are unclear. Instead of analyzing the weight this critic carries, and accepting it in good fate, they seem not to be perturbed. Like throwing a tiny stone to the tye of an elephant, nothing tickles it, and the opposition values this critique because they are ‘hungry for power’.
It appears the whole country is confused and do not know which party and who to trust to protect the public purse: they are all the same because from their actions, it appears that when water folds the wings of a bird, the sound it produce differs from the sound it will later produce when the wings are dry and ready to surf into the skies.
I was thinking that, as a “listening government”, it would be prudent on its part to take this critic in good fate and work for the better rather, they are out here and came in their numbers to defend everything rather than to work it out.
Can the NPP still hold on to power with this attitude and attack at anything that comes their way or the NDC which seem not to have a credible leader would clinge unto the reigns of power coming 2024?
