The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that it has interdicted, Inspector Daniel Agbavor, the police bodyguard for the Member of Parliament (MP), for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu, over what the police say is allegation of misconduct.
Inspector Agbavor’s interdiction is confirmed in a press statement dated, Sunday, October 31, 2021 and signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ASP) Kwesi Ofori, Director-General, Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service.
The statement indicated that the Inspector allegedly recklessly drove into a crowd which was protesting last Monday, October 25, 2021 in the MP’s constituency. The statement further noted that the Inspector’s action endangered the lives of two senior officers and other civilians who were present during the protest.
Information reaching Planbfmonline.com indicates that the Parliamentary Protection Unit has assigned a new guard to the MP until the matter is resolved after which Inspector Agbavor may return to post as a guard to the MP or a replacement is brought in.
Background
The Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency, Francis-Xavier Sosu joined some of his constituents on Monday, October 25, 2021 to protest over bad roads in the area. The situation later degenerated into some form of chaos with the police describing the MP’s action as unlawful which subsequently led to an invitation being extended to him to appear before the police for interrogation over his involvement.
During the protest, some of the MP’s constituents blocked portion of the area’s roads and burn lorry tyres demanding that the government immediately fix their bad roads.
Reports emerged over the weekend that the police made another attempt to arrest the MP at a church he had gone to fellowship. The police was said to have been prevented from doing so by some youth of the area who insisted on seeing a court warrant for the arrest of the MP and were said to have flatly turned down the request when the police failed to do so.
Parliament has earlier declined a request by the Ghana Police Service to have the MP report to its headquarters for interrogation. The MP in an earlier statement claimed that the police maltreated him and tried to arrest him during the protest.
