Aggrieved residents of Manhean, a surburb of Tema Newtown in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday stormed the construction site of the Sentuo Ltd to vent their anger on the management of the company for causing flooding in their homes.
The angry residents who staged a protest, blamed the operations of the contractors working on the project for yesterday’s flood which rendered several of them homeless, destroying their properties.
They accused the contractors of blocking a waterway which link directly to the Chemu Lagoon, compelling the water to overflow it banks anytime it rains.
According to them, the situation caused last night heavy flooding in the area during the torrential rainfall which nearly claimed the life of a baby, as well destroyed several properties.
The agitation at the Sentuo oil refinery project site resulted in some casualties with some two security officers at the project site sustaining injuries.
However, the police timely intervention managed to restore some calm.
Senya Ashitey who is the Assembly Member for the Oninku Electoral Area spoke about his frustration with the project.
However, a closed door meeting between the police, Assembly Member, community leaders as well as the Chinese contractors and management of Sentuo Steel Limited, managed to restore peace.
Management of Sentuo Steel, a Chinese company later visited the community to access the impact of last night damage caused by the flood.
An agreement was reached between management members and leadership of the community for some compensation to be made to the affected residents.
