The Chairman of the Economic Community West African States (ECOWAS), President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was today, Friday, 17th September 2021 captured at the capital city of Guinea Conakry. He went there with some delegations including the President of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire, His Excellency Alassane Ouattara.
Their purpose there is to discuss with the military leadership of Guinea, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya on the fate of President Alpha Condé among other issues. Before this meeting, the leadership of ECOWAS has sent countless warnings to Mamady to release President Alpha Condé but he refused. ECOWAS has also held a meeting with the military coup to hand over power to constitutional rule but they didn’t listen them.
The Heads of State of ECOWAS yesterday, 16th September 2021 held a meeting in Ghana and discuss the military coups in Guinea and Mali. According to them, they have given Mamady and his military men six months to hand over power to constitutional rule. They are also going to freeze the bank accounts of all the military men including their leader and also banned them from travelling to any ECOWAS country.
According to them, this will force the military coup to hand over power constitutional rule. But today the same ECOWAS chair who sent a warning to Mamady to release Alpha Condé is at his doorsteps ‘begging’ for the release of the Guinean President.
The people of Guinea gave the leadership of ECOWAS a hostile welcome. In the streets of Conakry, hundreds of Guineans stormed the place to hoot at the ECOWAS Chair and his delegations. The people were making noise that they do not want them in their country. They came with various placards telling the leadership of ECOWAS that they are happy with the current happenings in their country.
One of the placards captured in the video reads “C’est le people Guinee qui decide”. This is translated as “It is the people of Guinea who decide”. Another placard reads “63 fois non independance assurée”. This is also translated as “63 times no independence assured”. The messages on their placards show that they are happy with the military coup in their country because the constitutional rule has failed them.
