Ministry Of Health Suspends Nursing Training Colleges Admissions For 2021/2022 Academic Year

Ministry of Health recruiting 2019 nursing assistants, starting 9th June 2021

The Ministry of Health has suspended the academic calendar for the 2021/2022 academic year until further notice. This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Chief Director Mr. Kwabena Boadu Opoku-Afari to that effect. According to the ministry, Covid-19 pandemic was responsible for this last minute decision.

“I write to inform you to suspend the implementation of the 2021/2022 academic calendar. This is to allow continuing students to complete the 2020/2021 academic work and also enable the final year students prepare for the Nursing and Midwifery Council Examination in December, 2021”, part of the letter intercepted.

“The need for social distancing and compliance to all covid-19 protocols requires that before the commencement of the 2021/2022 academic year, the final year students would had vacated the school premises. That will create space for the first year students when they report”, another part read.

It will be recalled that last year the president through an excecutive instrument closed down schools and colleges at a time covid-19 was at its peak. Prospective applicants to nursing and midwifery schools were asked to wait until further notice. They were eventually admitted in January 2020 to begin the calender.

This year, it was least expected that the academic calendar would be suspended since all schools and colleges were in full force. Applicants who had undergone interview and waiting for admission letters have been left stranded. Administrators of the nursing and midwifery colleges are also caught hanging as the information came rather too late. In fact the information came at a time some schools had started issuing admission letters.

Even though the letter did not state when the academic calendar will begin, precedence points to January 2022 since the final year students will be writing their licensure examination in December this year.

It is however not clear if the Ministry of Education will issue similar directive to colleges of education in Ghana. CitizenOne shall fish out any development from this and update readers soon. You may follow me to receive the updates automatically.
