The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, in line with her earlier promise to refund allowances paid to her from 2017 since her husband, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, assumed office as the President of Ghana, has refund the money to the state.

In a statement released and signed by a certain Shirley Laryea from the office of the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo is said to have kept her promise of returning all allowances paid her on the assumption her husband in office in the year 2017.

Per the statement, the full amount has been paid back to the state. “I am directed herewith, a Consolidated Bank of Ghana Limited cheque number 000002 for an amount of GH¢899,097.84 (Eight Hundred and Ninety Nine Thousand, Ninety Seven Ghana Cedis, Eighty Four Pessewas) being the full refund for monies received from 7th January 2017 to date as allowances to Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic,” parts of the statement reads.

The statement continued that as discussed by an earlier statement issued on July 12, 2021, Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic, is refunding the amount stated above and also takes this opportunity to decline any allowances to be paid to her in future.

Concluding the statement mentioned that Her Excellency remains committed to her role as First Lady and is devoted to her charity work championing the wellbeing of women and children in Ghana.

A couple of days Plan-B FM sighted a report stating government’s decision to adopt the recommendations of an emolument committee to ensure that the spouses of the President and Vice President are paid for their roles monthly.
