Ejura Disturbances: Government Extends Committee’s Deadline

The Committee announced by Minister of Interior, Ambrose Dery to conduct a public enquiry into the disturbances recorded at Ejura in the Ashanti region which led to the death of a social media activist and two protesters have had its working period for submission a report on their findings, extended by one week.

The three-man committee which was earlier announced by the Interior Minister consist of a Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice George Kingley Koomson, Chairman of the committee, Security Analyst, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso and the Executive Director of Penplusbytes, Juliet Amoah. Marie Louise Simmons, a principal State Attorney, is serving as secretary to the committee.

The government’s decision to extend the committee’s working period by a week was announced by the Minister for the Interior through a letter to the Chairman of the committee dated July 8, 2021 and signed by Minister.

The extension of the committee’s working period follows a request by the 3-member Justice Koomson Committee of Inquiry probing the Ejura disturbances so as to enable it complete its work.

The committee was expected to conclude its work today, Friday, July 9, 2021, but it indicated on Thursday, July 8, 2021 there are more testimonies to be taken, which makes an extension critical.

It added that considering the testimonies yet to be taken, the committee in line with that requested for an extension of the deadline to complete its work by Friday, July16t, 2021.

In its response to the committee, the Interior Ministry in a statement said “Your request for the extension of the working period from Friday 9th July 2021 to Friday 16th July 2021 is hereby approved.”
