Political science Lecturer at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), Dr. Isaac Brako has advocated for the capping of financial contributions individuals and businesses make to political campaigns.
In an interview with Ohene Addo on plan B FM ‘Nkosuo Nsem’, he said politicians will recoup investments until we regulate party funding.
“Unless we change that; unless we figure out a way to cap spending to have an idea of who is contributing to which party, we are going to keep electing people but they cannot get the job done because too many people have invested in them and they feel obliged to serve those who have financed them rather than serving the party. This would continue unless a stricter law is put in place to monitor political party financing”, He said
Dr. Brako’s comments follow the immediate past Auditor-General, Mr. Daniel Domelovo’s calls for a law to set a ceiling as filling fees by political parties for elected positions as part of measures to deal with corruption in the country.
Reacting to these concerns, the lecturer said we need to rather focus on political party financing. He said the practice further deepens corruption in the country, and could destroys the country’s democratic gains if not checked.
“Look, unregulated flows of money in the funding of political parties and election campaigns threaten key democratic principles and values in the country. We need to focus more on political financiers. Service delivery may be compromised for political expediency. A lack of information on how much money parties raise and how they spend, it can harm the integrity and accountability of our political processes and institutions,” he indicated.
