Some residents residing in some communities in the West Akim Municipality of the Eastern Region are appealing to the government of Ghana, the Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament, NGOs and other philanthropists to come to their aid to assist them with some basic social amenities.
According to them amenities such as roads, electricity, mechanics boreholes, school buildings, tele-communication network, CHPS centers, staff quarters among others are not available in their area; a situation they said is affecting their daily lives.
During Plan-B FM’s visit to the municipality, some of the residents in communities such as Afranse Yaw Tano, Obotwene, Amantra, Esasseh, Asibrim and Odumama stated that the road network from these communities which connect the Asamankese -Suhum highway are so bad that it makes usage of the road almost completely difficult. They added that the poor nature of the roads makes it extremely difficult for the movement of human beings and goods from parts of the municipality to other parts of the country.
Expressing their displeasure at the situation, some of the residents noted that the damaged roads and bridges are slowing down businesses around that area. They added their voices of plea to the government to come to their aid as early as possible adding that the situation has affected businesses that needs to be restored. They added that if nothing is done about the poor roads network, their farm produce will continue to get rotten on their farms.
Mentioning other challenges they face in the area, the residents pointed out that communities like Amantra, Esasseh and Asibrim have no light, tele communication network and mechanized borehole, CHPS centers. The provision of these amenities, according to them will improve the living standard of the people.
The Assemblyman for Afranse Electoral Area, Mr. Abdul Jalilu Aliyu for his part, noted that the challenges in his electoral area are high and added that some of the challenges within some of the communities needs urgent action.
According to him, most people living in these aforementioned communities are farmers who have challenges in the area of poor roads, healthcare, electricity, water, access to quality education and others. He continued that the government would be doing them well, if it provides them with the amenities they require.
Regrettably he noted that the community has lost some expectant mothers due to the poor nature of the roads in the area. He said they could not reach health canters there were being sent to when they were in labour. “Some Women in labour sometimes were carried on wooden frames to the Asamankese – Suhum road before being sent with vehicles to the hospital at Asamankese”, he lamented.
Concluding he pointed out that out of the seven communities in his electoral, the residents of Afranse Yaw Tano are the ones that are hit hard because they lack most of these essential amenities.
