President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has relieved Mr. Daniel Yao Domelevo, the embattled Auditor General off his office adding that the latter is retired and therefore cannot remain in office.
President Akufo-Addo has in line with his directive, communicated his and that of the country’s appreciation to Mr. Domelevo for his service. The President did not waste time in announcing that a substantive replacement for the outgoing Auditor General will soon be announced.
According to the President, the Deputy Auditor General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu will continue to work as the acting Auditor General until a substantive Auditor General is appointed.
The President communicated to Mr. Domelevo through his secretary, Nana Bediatuo Asante in a letter dated March 3, 2021. “The attention of the President of the Republic has been drawn to records and documents made available to this Office by the Audit Service, that indicate that your date of birth is 1st June 1960, and that in accordance with article 199 (1) of the Constitution, your date of retirement as Auditor-General was 1st June 2020”, portion of the letter read.
It continued “based on this information, the President is of the view that you have formally left office.” The letter further stated that the President was grateful to the Auditor General for his service to the nation and wishes him the very best his future endeavours.
The issue surrounding Daniel Domelevo’s removal from office has become a subject for many news discussions with some correspondence between himself and the Audit Service Board gaining some public attention.
It is evidently clear from the correspondence that the Audit Service Board is of the view that Mr. Demelevo is not a Ghanaian but a Togolese and also that he is a retiree because his date of birth is 1st June 1960.
In his response to those claims, Mr. Domelevo informed the board that the two allegations are false and offered explanations to defend himself.
The board in response noted that the explanations are untenable and therefore considers Domelevo as a retiree, barely a day before he returns to work after over 160 days of compulsory accumulated leave.
In its last letter to Mr. Daniel Domelevo, the Board indicated that it had written to President Akufo-Addo to take the “necessary action” based on the information provided.
Mr. Domelevo despite the controversy, reported to his office on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 but did not make any public comments about the development.
