Dr. Albert Eshun, Director in-charge of Covid-19 Response Unit at the Asamankese Government Hospital in the Eastern region has allayed fears of Ghanaians over the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines and has called for public education on the need to be vaccinated against the disease.

Ghana became the first recipient of COVID-19 vaccine doses distributed by COVAX, a global vaccine sharing initiative on Wednesday February 24, 2020

Ghana took delivery of 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India.

Speaking on Plan B FM Morning Show “Nkosuo Nsem”, Dr. Eshun said a lot of public education and sensitization is needed to understand the makeup of the vaccine so as curb scepticism and dangerous conspiracy theories surrounding the Covid-19 Vaccines.

“We’ve had different vaccines like the ones for TB, Polio and the rest. This particular vaccine is here to protect us from the virus,” He said

“Taking the Vaccine will develop the system and boost the immune system to fight against the virus; The moment you are born, the body develops antibodies which is stored in the system to fight diseases and virus. The vaccine is here to protect us all”

“People with underlying health conditions should not be afraid, they should even be happy to get vaccinated. The mortality rate is high among them” He lamented

“We need to intensify public education to boost public confidence to subdue these conspiracy theories surrounding the vaccine from impotency, 666 and all that. It doesn’t hold. It is a deliberate attempt by a some people to cause fear and panic,” He concluded
