LGBTQ People Do Not Have Rights In Ghana – Mahama Ayariga

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central in the Upper East region, Mahama Ayariga says homosexuals in Ghana must come to terms with the fact that they do not have rights here in Ghana.

During an interview with an Accra based Television station monitored by Plan-B FM, the lawmaker noted that people who own up to being homosexuals in Ghana must be identified and face prosecutions.

“They don’t have the right to practice gay or lesbianism so they can’t say their rights have been violated. You don’t have the right to be gay or lesbians in Ghana. But I’m saying any person can advocate that we should confer that right on them.

“So we should now look for him or her that says they are into the activities and begin to punish the person for what they say they are,” the Bawku Central MP remarked today during the interview.

Over the last few days the issue of LGBTQ has seen a lot of Ghanaians strongly react to activists’ call for acceptance of gays and lesbians into the Ghanaian communities. Most people condemned it and stated that the practice of gayism and lesbianism is alien to the Ghanaian culture and must therefore not be accepted on all fronts.

Mahama Ayariga joins the list of Ghanaian lawmakers who have openly rejected the idea of accepting the practice of gay and lesbians’ activities in Ghana. He continued that the idea of allowing gays and lesbians’ activities in Ghana, is against the laws of the country and added that allowing such things in Ghana would go a long way to decay the morale fibre of the country.

Ghanaians recently woke up to the news of the commissioning of an office for LGBTQ people in Ghana. The issue generated anger towards their opening of the office; something the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo waded into by instructing National Security to shut the office which is said to be located in Ashonmang, an Accra suburb.

The said commissioning and fundraiser is said to have been attended by several diplomats including the Australian High Commissioner who pledged to support the group. Meanwhile the EU office in Ghana has also declared support for the group.
