Former Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Tema West, Lawyer Abraham Osei Aidoo is advocating for absolute separation of powers among the various arms of government. This, according to him, is to ensure effective monitoring and equitable distribution of resources to the various constituencies.
In an interview on Plan B FM Morning show dubbed ‘Nkosuo Nsem’ The legal Practitioner said his experience whilst serving under two or more arms of government has exposed him to how tough juggling both responsibilities can be.
“Being a Parliamentarian and at the same time a Minister is interesting. So combining the two is very difficult. I do not know any Minister or an MP who would say he is giving both sides the maximum attention, you can’t. If you don’t build the constituency, they will not vote for you, if you underperform as a Minister, the President will sack or reshuffle you. So it is tough. I think the best way to go is a complete separation of powers”.
“I will call for a change in our constitution to allow for strict separation. I think it is important to give your 100% to all,” The astute former law-maker indicated. “In a case where a minister doubles as an MP, his parliamentary role suffers more,” he stressed.
