Election 2020: GIBA Calls For Professionalism in Election Reportage

The Executive Council of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has encouraged all media organizations and journalists, especially members of GIBAt o diligently carry out their roles with the aim of consolidating the democracy of the nation with this year’s election in sight.

According to GIBA, the democracy of the country can be achieved when the media practices issue-based reporting with regards to policies of the various political parties. This they claim, will provide the electorate the requisite education on the electoral process and also, help the electorate make informed choices.

In a statement sighted by Plan B FM, it read, “As media practitioners, let us remind ourselves of the fact that we play a critical watchdog role in the socio-economic development of our dear nation Ghana, and thus we are all encouraged to uphold the core principles of good journalistic practices while ensuring that no media organization’s platform is used to propagate messages that could pose a threat to the peace and stability our beloved country Ghana enjoys.

Recognizing the role the media had played in educating the public towards the December 7 polls, GIBA urged “all media organisations to abide by the GIBA Code of Conduct and the GJA Code of Ethics and to continue playing the excellent role of being the public educator, transparency champion and watchdog, while providing extensive coverage to the electoral process.”

Concluding the statement, GIBA urged the Electoral Commission to continue to collaborate with media organizations by releasing information for public consumption in a timely manner to avoid speculations.
