Algerian President Admitted To Hospital After ‘Voluntary Quarantine’

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was transferred to hospital, the presidency said on Tuesday, days after he went into “voluntary quarantine” when several of his aides showed symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

Tebboune was moved to a specialized unit at a military hospital in the capital Algiers. He was in a “stable condition,” the statement said, without stating if he tested positive for the coronavirus.

Tebboune was admitted to hospital after recommendation of his doctors. “His health is stable and does not cause any concern, and he is continuing his daily activities from the treatment centre,” the statement added.

On Saturday, Tebboune went into “voluntary quarantine” after several of his aides showed symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

Tebboune, 74, was elected president last December, eight months after long-time ruler Abdelaziz Bouteflika was forced to resign, under pressure following street protests and from the powerful army.

Algeria has reported so far over 55,000 cases of the coronavirus and 1,897 related deaths.
