Ghanaians Health Policy Makers Should Raise Awareness Of Down Syndrome Just As Breast Cancer

The Executive Director of Todah Connect Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation which focuses on Down Syndrome and create its awareness among Ghanaians, Agnes Teiko Nyemi-Teye is pleading with policy makers in the country’s health sector, to as a matter of urgency, give the needed attention to the health challenge.

According to her, enough awareness creation has not been created for Down Syndrome just like it has been created for Breast Cancer. This, she pointed is not good enough and explained that an awareness creation would go a long way to help people especially parents of kids with the health challenge, know how to deal with it.

She appealed to the media to join the effort in creating Down Syndrome awareness just like they have joined health experts to create awareness for breast cancer which has gained recognition nationwide which is often celebrated in October..

Down Syndrome according to her is the commonest type of disability among children. It is also a chromosomal disorder that occurs from conception.

According to United States of America (USA) statistics, over 43% of all babies with Down Syndrome suffer from heat beat defect.  One out of every 600 babies born is affected with Down Syndrome.
