Petty Traders Bemoan Low Patronage At Oninku Market

Traders in the Oninka market in Tema, Community 1, have bemoaned low patronage of their wares.

During Plan B FM’s tour of the market on Thursday, October 1,2020, a cross section of traders at the market voiced their discontent with level of sales of their wares adding that the location of the market is not helping matters describing it as a commercial disadvantage.

‘We were used to selling in the big market.  Our customers over there were familiar with our vending posts and could easily locate us. But in this new market we struggle to make sales because our customers struggle to locate us. It is difficult for us. Something needs to be done about it”, said Maame Akosua, a snails seller.

A charcoal seller at the same market, Akosua Animah insists that the poor demarcation of the market is the reason for the low patronage of their products.

She lamented that petty traders in the Tema Community One main market were enjoying a measure of advantage over them because of the ease with which buyers located their vending stands, unlike the Oninku market.

“In the main market, it is easy for clients to locate sellers because they know the particular places to locate them. Over here at the Oninku park, it is not easy for your customers to locate you because the place is not as organized as in the main market”, she said.

She observed that buyers were accustomed to buying from the main market and that, many of her regular clients do not attend to her as frequently as they used to.

“The authorities need to look at our situation a little closer because it is like we are at the losing end. Our colleagues in the market are having the upper hand now. The customers find it difficult to come to our side of the market because they are not used to the entire idea of coming to a park to buy food stuff”, said Agyeiwaa, a tomato seller.
