Good Lifestyles Help In Good Ageing – Dr Lenusia

Dr. Lenusia Ahlijah a Specialist Family Physician and the Specialist-in-charge of Tema Polyclinic has urged people to have a good lifestyle to help in anti-ageing.

Dr Ahlijah made this appeal during an interview with Plan B FM, a Tema based radio station as part of activities marking this year’s International Day of Older Persons. She pointed out the situation where older persons are left out a lot of policies aimed at making the lives of the citizenry better was not the best.

In a one-on-one interview with Nkosuohene, the host of Nkosuo Nsem, a flagship morning programme on Plan B FM, Dr Ahlijah explained that older persons are also part of the Ghanaian society and should not be left out when decisions are made for members of such societies.

Continuing, she observed that eating well-balanced diet and regular exercise, mostly going for walks, low intake of alcohol and less smoking prevent greater health problems and helps in slowing down of ageing.

She pointed out that, a good lifestyle helps the body system and cells to grow and age successfully.

On how one could keep healthy and slow down ageing, she mentioned that it is important for one to be mentally active and added that the more an individual is healthy and engages in activities aimed at keeping one in good health, the more likely the person will age slowly or successfully.

She said activities like reading or even playing a game of ludo is enough for older persons to remain healthy. She explained that they may not have the energy to engage in activities that require strength to practice hence opting for things that require less energy to do.

According to her, the International Day for the Older Persons is a day which was initiated some three decades ago by the United Nations (UN). It is a day set aside to globally create awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse.

It is observed on October 1 annually all over the world.
