Two armed men suspected to be armed robbers this morning attacked a Chinese man at the premises of Tema Community 6 branch of GT Bank escaping with an unspecified amount of money.
According to some persons who claimed to be eyewitnesses to the unfortunate incident, the two armed men arrived at the premises of the bank on a motorbike and were seen to be wearing helmets.
The two were said to have loitered around the entrance of the bank for some minutes as if they were along with others present at the branch, waiting for banking hall to open for business so they can go ahead with their transactions.
One eyewitnesses narrated that he was the first to arrive at the bank premises. He further pointed out that, he settled in a plastic chair reserved for customers at the main entrance of the bank listening to a radio programme on his mobile phone when he noticed one of the robbers place what looked like a mobile phone call to someone. He continued that the demeanour of the man did not leave him with a feeling of apprehension.
He added that, the whole incident happened in a flash with the robbers firing a number of gunshots as they robbed the Chinese man as well as some other persons who were also waiting for the bank to open for business.
“The next thing I realized is the two men suddenly pulled guns from their shirts and started pointing the guns at us. One of them quickly moved towards the Chinese man (whose name Plan B FM later gathered as Johnny) and demanded that the man hand over a bag containing some money to him. He did not waste time in shooting the concrete floor where the Chinese man was standing”, the eyewitness remarked.
According to him, the Chinese man may have been frightened by the actions of the armed and subsequently handed over the bag containing the unspecified amount of money to them. They reportedly fled on the motorbike they arrived on before the police arrived at the scene.
A gentleman at the scene told Plan B FM that he lost about GH¢6,000 to the robbers. According to him in an attempt to flee from the robbers, the said amount of money which was on his lap fell to the ground.
“One of them took my money which fell to the ground before they rode on their motorbike and fled before the police arrived”
A lady clad in the uniform of a private security firm at the bank noted that, a police man by name Ampah who is supposed to supplement her efforts in guarding the entrance of the bank is not regular when it comes to the issue of time. According to her, the said police policeman does not report early and added that the story was no different this morning.
“He does not come to work here at the bank early. I have tried reaching him on phone but he has not answered my calls and so I am not able to tell where he is right now and what time he is likely to get here”, she indicated.
At the time of filling this story four vehicles of the Ghana Police Service had arrived at the robbery scene, perhaps to commence investigation into the matter.
