About 24 passengers are in critical condition after a sprinter bus in which they were travelling got involved in a ghastly accident around the Sege Polyclinic on New Year’s Day.

The accident, which occurred at about 1130hours, led to the sprinter bus with registration number GR 5260-24 summersaulting about three times before landing on its side, injuring all passengers onboard.

Mr. Christopher Okudzeto, an eyewitness, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the bus heading towards Sogakorpe in the Volta Region from the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout in Accra burst two of its tyres, one front and one back, resulting in the accident.

Mr. Okudzeto disclosed that all persons in the vehicle got injured, with some sent to various nearby hospitals.

Mr. Lucky Ekuwornu, a victim, recounting the accident, said, “After the burst of the first tyre from the back, the driver screamed. Immediately, one of the front tyres also burst, making the vehicle lose its balance, veer from the road, and summersault three times before finally landing on the ground.”

He added, “I was scared; everybody was injured. I was transferred to the Lekman Hospital, where they performed an x-ray on me and gave me medications.”

Health officials at Sege told the GNA that a lady who is yet to be identified who was carrying a baby girl aged around one year was unconscious and on admission at the Sege Polyclinic.

The lady is yet to be identified; meanwhile, Mr. Ekuwornu disclosed that some unknown persons who rushed to the accident scene siphoned the belongings of the accident victims instead of helping them.
