The Member of Parliament for the Cape Coast South constituency, Kweku Ricketts-Hagan has described the 2023 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of government as wasteful and full of lavish expenditures.
Mr. Ricketts Hagan in an interview on Plan B FM ‘Ebaanosen’ said the 2023 budget allocated so much funds to government flagship programmes that didn’t yield the expected results.
“This government started with 120 ministers, the number has ballooned to an unacceptable level. The President must listen and reduce the size of his government. The hard times Ghanaians are going through are enough evidence that there is no better time than now to reduce the size of government.” He told the host Ohene Kinnah.
The lawmaker also chided the government for the continued funding of the National Cathedral project. He says the construction of the National Cathedral Project can longer be a top priority, given the existing cost of living crisis in the country.
He maintains that, no further attempts must be made to continue committing over $400m of public funds and the little state resources to the project in these crucial times.
Mr. Ricketts Hagan further reiterated that the minority will remain resolute in objecting to the E-levy, the 2.5 percent increase in VAT, the National Cathedral, and the debt restructuring.
“The 2.5 increase in VAT is a pile up of more hardships on the people of Ghana. We the minority will fiercely resist till the end” he added
He questioned the moral right of President Akufo-Addo to increase VAT by 2.5% when he led the “KUMI PREKO” demonstration in 1995
